How Statutory Maternity Pay works

SMP runs for 39 weeks: the first 6 weeks at 90% of your average weekly earnings, then 33 weeks at the statutory flat rate (or 90% of earnings if that's lower). It's paid through payroll, so tax and NI still apply. Many employers enhance this — check your contract and enter the enhancement above.

Statutory Sick Pay is a flat weekly rate for up to 28 weeks, also taxable. Neither SMP nor SSP counts as pensionable pay by default.
